The Republic of Vanuatu
Jewel of the Southwestern Pacific
Vanuatu, formerly known as the New Hebrides, is a captivating island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Comprising 13 principal islands and many smaller islets, Vanuatu lies about 1,090 miles east of Australia and 310 miles west of Fiji. Its lush volcanic landscapes, vibrant culture, and pristine marine environments make it a dream destination for adventurers and nature lovers alike. Since gaining independence from joint British and French rule in 1980, Vanuatu has operated as a democratic republic with a non-executive president as head of state and a prime minister elected by parliament. It is renowned for its exceptional scuba diving and snorkelling. The islands’ clear, warm waters are home to vibrant coral reefs, dramatic underwater caverns, and famous shipwrecks such as the SS President Coolidge. Divers and snorkellers can encounter turtles, rays, reef sharks, and dazzling schools of tropical fish, with sites suitable for all experience levels. The archipelago boasts lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and volcanic peaks, with a unique biodiversity that includes widespread plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth. Conservation efforts help preserve these natural treasures, supporting both scientific research and eco-tourism. Its major attractions include: Mount Yasur Volcano (Tanna Island), one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes with spectacular eruptions; Mele Cascades and Blue Lagoon (Efate), with crystal-clear pools, waterfalls and blue holes; Cultural Experiences such as Kastom villages, with traditional ceremonies, and bustling markets in Port Vila; Land Diving (Pentecost Island) to watch the unique ritual that inspired modern bungee jumping. Vanuatu’s blend of natural beauty, rich culture and adventure make it one of the Pacific’s most enchanting and rewarding destinations.
